Dr. V. Wee Yong is a Professor in the Departments of Clinical Neurosciences and Oncology at The University of Calgary.

Dr. Yong received his undergraduate degree in Pharmacology (Honours) from the University of Manchester, Manchester, England,  before moving on to complete his Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. In 1989, he joined the faculty at the Montreal Neurological Institute, McGill University, Montreal, and relocated to Calgary in 1996.

Dr. Yong’s research interests lie in the area of neuroimmunology, neuroprotection, and CNS regeneration. His scientific projects have been guided by three diseases: multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, and malignant gliomas. Although a basic scientist, Dr. Yong also works in close collaboration with clinical colleagues Luanne Metz,  John Hurlbert, and Steve Casha – spearheading a number of clinical trials in multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injury.

Dr. Yong is published in over 190 peer-reviewed manuscripts and receives grants from several national/international funding agencies. In 2003, Dr. Yong was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Year Medallion for volunteer activities on behalf of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada.  In 2004, Dr. Yong was named to the Canada Research Chair in Neuroimmunology. Dr. Yong currently chairs the Medical Advisory Committee of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, directs the Alberta endMS Regional Research and Training Centre, is on the editorial board of seven international journals, and sits on the International Advisory Boards of the American Society of Neurochemistry and the International Society of Neuroimmunology.
