The Seizure Monitoring Unit (SMU) is a specialized four-bed inpatient unit at the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC) designed to evaluate, diagnose, and treat seizures and characterize seizure like spells in adult patients.

Located on the neurology unit (PCU111), the SMU is staffed with a multidisciplinary healthcare team of specially trained medical, nursing, allied health (social work, psychology, etc.) and technical personnel. Patients on the unit are monitored 24 hours a day via video and EEG recording. This extensive observation helps epileptologists characterize the type of spells, localize the area where the seizure begins, and exclude non-epileptic seizures from the diagnosis – allowing the team to develop customized treatment plans for each patient.
