The division provides services for Southern Alberta, South-eastern British Columbia and South-western Saskatchewan. The division’s primary inpatient unit is at the Foothills Medical Centre with amputee patients being treated at Carewest Glenmore Park and stroke patients at Carewest Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre. The division provides consultation services at Peter Lougheed Hospital and Rockyview General Hospital, Carewest Glenmore Park and Carewest Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre.
Unit 58 at the Foothills Medical Centre is the primary inpatient unit for the division and one of the groups involved in the GRIDLOCC project and preliminary reports for September to December are beginning to show some ”fruit of their labour”. This is evident with patients feeling more involved in the objectives for their inpatient stay as well as the transition from acute care therapy to rehabilitation therapy. This work is clearly a team approach involving physiatrists, therapists and nurses.
The division members continue to be actively involved in undergraduate medical education and continued strong presence with residency education. There are several members involved in collaborate research.
A researcher in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Faculty of Medicine, UCalgary, is searching to find out how resident stem cells become regulated in hopes of finding new ways enhance the body’s natural mechanisms for repair and regeneration following a traumatic injury - treating burns more effectively.
