Dr. Keith Brownell received his MD from Queen’s University in 1964. Upon completion of a rotating internship at the Vancouver General Hospital, he entered general practice in Kamloops, British Columbia for three years. Dr. Brownell then trained in neurology (at Queen’s University and the University of Michigan) and muscle disease (under Dr. Andrew Engel at the Mayo Clinic). He was certified in neurology by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1972, and joined the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary in 1975. When Dr. Brownell joined the Faculty, Neurology was a division in the Department of Internal Medicine and so he became the second full-time faculty member in the division.
Clinically, Dr. Brownell’s interests include general neurology, neuromuscular diseases and muscle pathology. Much of his career has been devoted to education – both as a teacher and administrator. Dr. Brownell has served as a residency Program Director (internal medicine and neurology), was Post-Graduate Medical Education Dean for nine years, and has been Director of the Undergraduate Neuroscience Course. In addition to teaching, Dr. Brownell currently co-chairs the Physicianship Unit (which extends throughout all three years of the Undergraduate Medical Education Curriculum) and is a small group leader in the Medical Ethics Unit (in Years I and II). He also leads the Ethics and Professionalism teaching for neurology residents in their didactic teaching program, and serves as the ombudsperson for residents in the Department of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Brownell has over 60 peer-reviewed publications, and has received a number of awards recognizing his contributions to teaching and education locally, nationally, and internationally, including the Royal College Region 1, Mentor of the Year Award (2000-the first year it was given), and the American Neurological Association’s Distinguished Neurology Teacher Award in 2002 (the first Canadian to receive this award).
